Traditional polish dinner includes soup and a second course, which is very often: mashed potatoes with sauce, meat and a salat.
Polish mashed potatoes originally don’t take much work to be ready and there are only 3 ingredients in the recipe.
Polish people eat potatoes almost every day and usually they have mashed potatoes. If you ever have a chance to have a Sunday dinner with a polish family I can assure you - there will be some mashed potatoes on the table.
Important: this recipe was approved by my mother in law.
Ingredients (for 2 servings):
1 pound potatoes
1 quarter of water
1 tbs of salt
1. Peel and wash potatoes, cut them into about 1 inch pieces – they don’t have to be small, it is more about making possibly same size pieces as they boil in the same time.
2. Put potatoes into a pot, pour water.
3. Boil it for about 15-20 minutes. New potatoes take less time to boil. Check with a fork if the potatoes are soft. Don’t over cook them as the it affects the taste.
4. After about 10 minutes of boiling add salt. Pour the water out and mashed potatoes. Serve hot.
This is a simple polish recipe for mashed potatoes. They do taste very good with almost any kind of sauce. If you don’t have any sauce they go along great with chopped green onions and melted butter.
If you want to serve potatoes without sauce it is good to add some butter (3 tbs spoons) and half a cup of milk. This way potatoes will be moist. 1 tea-spoon of garlic powder and a pinch of black or white pepper will give the meal a good flavour.

This recipe calls for mashed potatoes. Ukrainians call it “Palushky”, and I think in Poland they call them “Kopytka”, or Gnocchi in the US.

I also like them made out of sweet potatoes:
