Hello in Russian
The purpose of this page is to show you some simple ways to say hello in Russian. Hello in Russian takes two forms a formal and informal form. Formal is for professional use and strangers and informal is for people you know well, people your own age and people at work you know.
Hello in Russian | Formal
The formal form is similar in Russian, Polish and Ukrainian. Hello in Russian is Добрый день that is dobre dzien. However, even more formal with a boss it is Здравствуйте that is, zdravstvujte. But keep it simple and just know Dobre Dzien sounds like Doe-brie Jen . This means ‘good day’ But really Hello in Russian.
Hello in Russian | Informal
The easiest and most common form of hello in Russian is Привет that is ‘privet’. Image you say hello to someone you know really well in ‘private’. This is a Russian mnemonic for hello in Russian. In my learn Russian program I have countless mnemonics.
Two dirivatives of ‘privet’ are”
- Приветик Privetik – hi
- Приветище Privetische – a very big hi
- Превед Preved – Padonkoffskiy slang for hi
Another form of hello in Russian is Хай this is actually ‘hi’ pronouced ‘hi’
Two more forms of Hello in Russian or ‘hi’ because it is informal is:
- ЗдоровО (Zdorovo)
- Даров (Darof) –used only when speeking
Just like ‘Privet’ has dirivatives so does the formal hello in Russian, from dobre dzien to
- Добрутр dobrutr
- Бобрутр bobrutr – this is a funny form of hello.
Next time you meet a Russian, you will be well armed with a number of ways to say hello in Russian.

How to say "hello" in russian
I’m russian, and a was pretty amused while reading this post
Let me clarify.
Привет Privet – the most widespread form of russian hello.
Приветик Privetik – used mostly by girls. So if you (being a man) say Privetik to your friend, he might think that you’re a gay. But you still can use it addressing to a girl, that’s ok.
Приветище Privetische [priveti∫e]- a derivative form of hello, I rarely came across with it, though it sounds good.
Здорово Zdorovo – used mostly by men informally addressing to men.
Добрутр dobrutr – is incorrect.
Доброе утро [dobroe utro] – means “good morning”. You’d better consult the recipient’s time zone first before saying dobroe utro to him or her.
I hope my comment will come in handy to anyone reading this post.
Hello in Russian – Thank you for this classification and clarification. I am a non native speaker of course and only when you grow up with a language do you know all this. I speak Polish but Russian not as well.
