Humans are complex and multi layered. I recommend looking at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. To say there is an exact one to one correlation between faith and happiness is reckless. Yet there is a reasonable correlation, but it is not one model fits all.

And stepping back from the science of it, in my personal experience people without faith have this existential angst which I would call unhappiness. The exceptions are ethical atheist who have a level of awareness and developed an internal ethic. Yet eve these people, with some exceptions have a melancholy about them.

The Soviets did an excellent job at eradicating religion and what will replace it in post industrial Russian culture is a good question.

If you are saying people have faith to build up their dreams and hopes, I disagree, maybe some do, but I could say people jettison their faith because they hope and dream of nothingness, of lack of responsibility and accountability of action. Like Dostoevsky asserted ‘if God did not exist than all things are permissible, why not lie cheat and steal if it is to your own advantage’.

I think it is very comforting for people to hope and dream of nothingness to escape awareness of the interconnectedness of all of us on a spiritual level.

Religion may work sometimes because we need to build up some dreams and hopes by means of it. But it doesn’t mean if some communists are sad that is because they are not religious. As I know a lot of religious people who are sad too. Maybe we need to find some different and more interesting dreams and wishes or acquiring necessary skills through appropriate training to satisfy our souls. I mean religion may not be the only option to help human feel happy. I think we’d better to search for alternatives as well.

Education by the parents means spending time with the kids. Mark Twain said ‘never let your school interfere with your education’. I tend to agree. I think school can mess a child up. While rarely do parents who spend quality time do. I also think religion is important. I see many people in the CIS without religion because of the communist influence on the culture walk around with very sad, long faces. Religion completes us as we are not just animals, we have spirit.

The main thing is education. I agree with you. Not necessarily bring in the religious framework. It suffices to spend more time with your child. Child to receive timely answers to questions in the first place of parents. I think that this can be completed.

I do not disagree with a lot of what you say. However, there are many places which have modernity and values. Dubai may be one of them. But in the USA there are large parts of the USA that do not follow this conception of a liberal free anything goes society. Large parts of the midwest and south are modest in terms of values. Look sub cultures from the Amish to the Orthodox Jews. In Europe where I live in Poland many if not most Polish girls are catholic and take their religion seriously. Not all but enough so that the girls are modest and truly loyal to their ideals. I do think you have people in Russia that are like this too of course.
The best thing to protect a girl from getting corrupted by the wrong values is the parents spending time with them and teaching them on a day-to-day basis about life. Not preaching as they will rebel sometimes, but just spending time with them.
Then when they fly out of the nest, they are free to live their own life and if they want to get a nose ring and go crazy, it is their life as we all have free will. However, if from the start they are taught about faith and God then chances are they will have the wisdom to discern in life.

In Europe, largely a lot of not very positive. Enough legalized homosexuality and prostitution. What Europeans do not like to drink alcohol? Europe casually. Europeans and Americans do not know the word impossible. The women look like men. Tattoos, incomprehensible-colored hair, skinheads and piercings, a cigarette in his mouth and alcohol (gin and tonic, beer, whiskey, brandy or whatever they have), energy, and drugs. I’m Russian, I repeat, I’m not saying that I would like to adopt Islam as a religion. But I believe that a woman should be a woman. Modest, feminine, sweet, charming, Europe offers a lot of freedom for young people. And it’s dangerous for them. I’ll tell you this: when I became a mother, I realized how afraid of a mother’s heart for your child. And I really want to have many children. Dubai is a city where all the modernity on the one hand, and where a woman is a woman, the man will be a man. While this is the only place on earth where I feel calm. Try to dissuade me, mister administrator. Maybe you should bring me a sample of European countries and I have changed my categorical point of view.

Cristi, why must you live in the Middle East? Is it only for work? What about Europe. There are many place in Europe that might be more to your style and you can raise your daughter. Although Dubai has sun and many nice hotels, it might not be the best place for a foreigner to raise a daughter? She might like a greener setting even if the money is not as good.

I’m Russian. I am married and we have a little daughter. I believe that women should be only be with one man. In non-Muslim countries there is largely open debauchery. I would really like to live with my husband and our daughter in Dubai. This includes, wearing proper dess and clothes. I really like the policies in the UAE about the alcohol and other things. But we’re Russian and we can not live in Dubai. The reason is we are no one here and will never be. And we have to live here, and I am very sad that my daughter will have to live here.
