Word of the day to learn a foreign language
The best place for a word of the day note card for me is front of the computer. Other people might choose the bathroom mirror or the sofa in front of the TV. A word of the day place is great if its a place where you relax and do not even thinking of learning. The word is just there. I use note cards and make a simple flash card for learning foreign language words.
Is a word of the day effectiveto learn a foreign language
Yes -a word of the day is effective, just do the math. I had a person say three years ago that it was a waste of time because you only learn one day. But over 3 years that is 1,000 words in a foreign language, and you know how time flies. Even if word of a day does not teach a lot of foreign language words it does teach some. Every time you learn a new word in a foreign language you say to yourself ‘how could I have done without that word’.
Word of the day – psychology of learning a foreign language
Most of learning a foreign language is attitude. If you tell yourself you will learn 200 words a day, this is great if you can do it, but usually people set goals that are too high and become frustrated when trying to maintain that level of foreign language word learning. I recommend to set goals low, which you will exceed. Then this will build your confidence and you will get in the habit of exceeding your goals everyday. This strengthening of your self confidence is key to learn a foreign language, as everyone, and I mean everyone says ‘I do not have the gift of language learning’; after years of teaching languages to 1,000s of students, I have not meet anyone with a so called ‘gift for learning a foreign language, only people who work at learning a foreign language and believe in themselves. Therefore learning a word of theday in a foreign language not only teaches you a foreign language word, but it also strengthens your motivation and confidence to learn more foreign language words.

Learning 1 word a day and expecting to learn a language in 3 years is about as logical as doing 5 press ups a day and expecting to become a a bodybuilder in 3 years.
Poor metaphor, why? a professional bodybuilder is elite, while to speak a language at any level does not mean you will be a poet, but rather you can communicate. Maybe it is more like running 1 mile a day, you will be in better condition than most people out there, or going to the gym for 1 hour. Really poor metaphor. How many languages have you learned as an adult?
Do you remember your first “words of the day” after a month or two? I’ve tried this method with some English words that were very difficult for me to memorize and I found that learning without repetition is rather ineffective. It’s essential to come back to a word from time to time and then, the brain will “keep” it.
You need to keep reviewing and using these words. You could write them on a large wall calender that you will see the words, all of them, or you could try to cumulatively review them weekly. Or try to activate them with games so you will not forget or start reading and you will see them as you read.
