Russian Old believers
You have herd of the the Amish in America, but have you herd of the Russian Old believers? These are a group of Russians who believe in the old ways of religion and tradition. They live in communities that stretch from Moscow to Oregon. Remember Alaska was part of Russia about 150 years ago, therefore many Old believer colonists settled in along the coast from Alaska to California. They generally shun technology and live in their own communities. Russian and Slavic culture has so many things unknown to the west and in the last few post I have tried to post little tidbits about Slavic culture that is well known to those who live in Russian, Ukraine and Poland but unheard of to those who live in the west. So if you want to learn Russian or any other Slavic language, I think you will end up learning more than just the language, as the Slavic world is a different world.

As a Russian Orthodox Old Believer I would like to point out that we do NOT shun technology, we do however live in small communities (as they were places we settled upon our arrival in this country in the 1960s). Today many Old Believers are educated, do not hide away from the rest of the world are somewhat offended to be so stereotyped. If you want to make a small bio please try to get the facts correct. We use computers too.
Thank you for your reply about Russian old believers. I have only positive, very positive opinions about Old believers and great respect. Most Amish do not use computers, but some Amish do use computers, so it depends, and I think this is the case with Russian Old believers. However, you are correct Russian old believers do not shun technology. I stand corrected.
