Russia wants to takeover part of Ukraine
Russia wants Crimea to be part of Russia not Ukraine. Why? Oil. Read my comment at the bottom, its really about oil. What does Russian say is the reason? There are many Russians that live in Ukrainian Crimea. Why is this crazy that Russia wants Crimea? Because there are many Polish people that live in Chicago so that means this should be part of Poland? Or Florida should go to Cuba? Or Quebec should go to France? Hong Kong should go back to the English? If Putin, um I mean Russia was consistent in its logic then half of Russia would break apart.
Ukrainian not Russian Crimea
Crimea is and has been part of Ukraine not Russia. International boundaries were agreed on. It is contiguous part of Ukraine. Russia wants to take it over and I think because the USA is so focused on saving Iraqi oil, um I mean people, they turn their backs on the politics in Eastern Europe, except Moscow, um I mean Russia. They always have. Russian wants to occupy Crimea with warships etc, like it holds all these countless other republics that are of economic or military interest to them. The Russian fleet is already in Crimea and the Ukrainian president wants it out. The major of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov (a Putin puppet), has public declare that Crimea belongs to Russia. Russia is an imperialistic Czardom.
Russian people
I love the Russian people. I love Russia. I love Russian culture. I am 100% Slavic in blood and live in Eastern Europe and travel to Russian, Moscow and Ukraine. But I am just telling it like I see it. Gary Kasparov one of the brightest minds in the world sees it this way too, that Russia is no democracy. And the Russian people are suffering because of this. Muscovite’s who have power get rich, while the Russian citizens get marginally better lives, just enough so they do not complain to much, however, if Russia had true democracy and free movement of labor and capital and gave up its imperialism it could be an extremely dynamic place, not just Moscow.
Crimea is Ukrainian not Russian
Crimea is part of Ukraine and Russia should not try to take it over.

Do you think that this is Putin’s doing or influence?
Yes of course its Putin. Ukraine wants to start shipping oil from the Middle East and Asian republics via the black sea then build a pipeline directly to Poland. This means Europe will get oil without having to go through Russia.
Well there’s some good stuff in this blog.
But I’ve gotta REAALLLY disagree on this one.
I’m half Slav and my grandfather was from Kiev.
Was he Ukrainian?Absolutely not.In his view the Ukrainian language was simply a Russian dialect watered down by Polish , Lithuaniuan /German invasions.
And he was proud that Kiev was Russia’s ( or the Rus’s ) first capital.
The Crimea , IMO , is about the fact the Ukraine has only been an independent country for only 17 years since about the 9th Century or so.Before , it was part of Russia ,occupied by others , or in the Soviet Union , or infact the region with the capital of Russia.Ukrainian identity ( probably started when the region was freed from Poland), in Russian eyes is simply Russian , with a bit of Polish etc mixed in.
Unfortunately , the West thought that to poison relats between Muscovy and the Ukraine would destroy the Soviet Union.Well , arguably it did.Ukrainian politics , like Russian , is far from perfect. And America had a huge goal to get the Ukraine hating Moscow.
The Ukraine and the Russian Fed suffer in all this.Personally I believe a Single Economic Space ( SES) -like the EU for the CIS happen -once again Moscow dominated.
Vast numbers of Russians have left the Ukraine. Its poverty striken and corrupt and some of its leaders seem to take their orders direct from Washington’s agitators. Its a terrible shame because the Ukraine and the Federation share so much history ( the same country for getting on 900 ish years since the Rus’s inception) yet seem to be at odds.Dont believe everything you read in our Western press about Russia- Ukraine relats.
Moscow and Kiev can be like two bickering siblings. But the same family nonetheless – as much as NY and LA are to America , atleast in the opinion of many.I think that the states – the Russian Federation , Belorussian , Kazakstan and the Ukraine should all join up again .Much in the same was as places such as the Altai , Siberia etc , originally joined Russia when the Ukraine rejoined
Regards all.
@timo Since I live in Eastern Europe I have meet old cranks, that boarder on racism and ultra nationalism like your granpa and you, a few times, to say Ukrainian is a watered down version dialect, wow you are really a racist or stupid to believe that. Ok expert tell me how many German and Lithuanian words are used in Ukrainian everyday? Ukrainian has much less foreign words than English. Ukrainian by any persons way of looking at it is an Eastern Slavic language very very different than Russian. Are you saying that French is a dialect of Italian also. You just have a low IQ. Ukrainian was first. Ukraine Kievian state was first. Russia came after Ukraine, as did the language. Did you know about the Kievian state? This was very different than Russia. Germany first appeared on the map in 1870 and Italy around the same time, and yet are you saying these are not counties? There were Ukrainian states in history. Did you know know that Ukrainian not Russian was less changed as a language by Asian invasions etc. Russia has exploited Ukraine like it exploited Poland and every country it tried to “russify” and killed millions of people who resisted. Ukraine and all the people I know in Ukraine see themselves as Ukrainians. Do the Irish see themselves as English? Russia is very different then Ukraine. Kiev is Ukrainian even after Stalinist Russification… All the Ukrainians are coming from the villages to work in Kiev and slowly replacing Russian. Your thinking sounds like someone who does not believe in free right for a people have their own system and language and free movement of labor and capital. Ukraine would be better off in the EU than anything to do with Czar Putin and his exploitation of people for the glorification of Moscow. You are very foolish to think that Moscow is some friendly force to anyone but the cronies of the people in power. It is a czardom run by Putin and will exploit anything that is in Moscow’s best interest. The Russian people are wonderful but there are either the rich or poor with a weak middle class in Russia and they themselves are being help back by this imperialism and cloak and dagger Moscow rule, rather than true democracy and respect for other peoples. Ukraine is not Moscow and thank goodness it never will be. It is Ukrainian.
Timo,
you have been brainwashed….or should i say brainsquashed. You have shown your complete ignorance in your statements and it makes me laugh. Never trust a Ruski, I say, never! Russians tried to murder Ukraine, but nationalism will never die. Russia can’t survive on its own, so it tried to monopolize and dominate those that have inherent wealth, like Ukraine with its oil and wheat. Anyone who believes a Russian who says Russia came first, and Ukraine is nothing but a subsidiary or of the like is just an idiot!
I have nothing against Russia, as long as it remembers where its borders STOP.
Ukraine is Ukraine. It is NOT Russia….and RUS….well, that was Rus, not Russia.
I think someone needs to brush up on their history…and they should read from sources other then Russian text books.
SLAVA UKRAYINI!
Its funny how little people can know about the truth. Sure US supports Ukraine in that it is an independant nation but they only say that. I dont see the text books saying that? When it comes to the kings of Slovyan{early Ukranians} Yaroslav The wise Vladamir the Great, the textboks claim that this is early Russia. And kids in school agree cuz its wat the textbook says so they think its right. Its not! Ukraine exsisted way before Russia since the damn of early civilization. This culture age was known as Trpilskta culture. Ukraine is Ukraine, Russia is Russia, and Russia will be a lot less weaker without Ukraine because they desperatly try to get together as one nation for the sake of russia. its not gonna work becuase nationalism will always win! Long Live Ukraine….remember that for all those ignorant fools out there.
@Vitaliy Your right – see the Russian way of thinking is they just want to claim what is in their interest without respect to anything else, like a fat bear. This has been Russia for 500 years why does the world think they will change their greedy aggressive imperialism overnight. Ironically it is the Russian people who suffer as the top 1 % benefit from Russian policies.
I am Crimean Tatar and i am mixed with Iranian-Turkish blood and so on. I love slavic people and of course my great grand-uncle was from Russia. So he told me always respect people no matter who they are. I respect and love people no matter where they are from because Crimean Tatars are friendly, and im not rasict. I always want peace in our homeland Crimea. And i want Crimea Tatars, Russians, Polish, and Ukranians, and other minorities live in peace not for greed. In Poland i should say there are a lot of Crimean Tatars living in Diaspora. Also around the world. Peace.
Great post! In fact amazing post. When I was in Crimea I saw how many peaceful Crimean Tartars and Chrisitan Slavic people living side by side there were. In fact it is what makes Crimea interesting, it is a like a peaceful melting pot, a very exotic place were Christians and Muslims live in peace. I really love Crimea.
I live in Ukraine. It’s good, very good country. Almost all people is patriots. But Russia thinks, that it is very strong and may to govern Ukraine and others countries of former USSR. I from Turkey and don’t want see “tied” Ukraine by Russia. All problems in Ukraine from Russia! For example, former prime minister of Ukraine Yanukovich is KGB’s agent. Think about it… P.S. sorry my English.
I think the Crimea should belong to Russia, the main language in the Crimea is Russian and over 70% of the Crimea are ethnic Russians, if you’re going to write against the majority nationality in an area maybe you should find out their beliefs on being part of what nation they want to be, in 2007 when an American ship sailed over to the Crimea they started chanting anti-NATO sayings at the ship and the people were holding Russian flags as if the Crimea actually was part of Russia.
I am a Russophile. I am really love Russia and Russian history and culture and the people. However, Russia was nothing more than an empire that destroyed many people’s and extracted wealth for their own cause. Putin is a czar. Many people speak Russian in Crimea because Russia tried to Russify Ukraine. Force people to speak Russian. Stalin destroyed and terminated millions of Ukrainian lives. Russia should leave Ukraine alone. The NATO protests you talked about are sponsored by czar Putin with Czar Putins cash. Most people in Crimea are peaceful people, Ukrainians, Russian and Tartars living together in peace with semi autonomy. There is no reason Russian needs another needs to cause trouble in Ukraine after all the stuff they have done to the Ukrainians. Be honest Russia is an Empire and Putin is a Czar. Gary Kasparov knows this and this is why they try to suppress him. I am actually pro Russia. And the best thing that could happen to Russian is they become a true democracy not an empire. I am for the Russian people, like I am for the Ukrainian people. The Russian government not the Russian people is the problem. And yes the Russian government should stay out of Ukraine.
Correction Crimea was part of Russia until the 1960′s When Ukrainia by blood, Krushev the Soviet dictator gave it to Ukraine. In my eyes and in the eyes of the people still living in Crimea, Crimea will always be part of Russia. Sevastopol was built by Russia, for the Russian fleet, Russia pored all that money into the city and it will keep it regardless of what Yushenko, or any other numb nut thinks. The West continues to make Russia look like the agressor but Russia is just like any other country looking for its self interest and preservation.
this spring i went to Ukraine, and i have experienced the ill feelings that they have toward Russia. i think that it is completely unfair that Ukraine doesn’t get to be itself. And so what if they have their own oil spots in Crimea. i mean that was obviously decided in the boundary lines. Russia just knows that its government is going down the toliet, and honestly nothing good is happening there in politics, and they feel as if they need to fight for this. Ukraine, in my opinion, could do well for itself if they broke off of Russia. i mean Putin and Mendevev have just brainwashed poor Russians to think that they are doing good for their citizens. and honestly, he makes it sound as if other political parties have a chance…when its obvious that they totally don’t. Centalized/United Russia is the only option that they are really given. Putin knew that most of the political parties wouldnt be able to make the 7% mark, and even if all of the parties combined as ONE, they still wouldnt be able to out-do United Russia…..so look PUTIN, you have sucessfully created your centralized plans.
Let Ukraine be Ukraine.
Tina, it is sad that Putin is misleading the country of Russia. Russia would be one of the richest countries in the world, as judged by the Russian middle class if Russia was not such a rude imperialistic controlled corrupt economy. If Russia cleaned up corruption 100% and opened to real market reform and stopped playing childish games of 19th century imperialism then Russia would be a great country. Europe grew up and stopped 19th century imperialism, Russia has embraced it. They have cause Ukraine and the Ukrainians nothing but suffering. I hope someday Ukraine will be EU but Russia keeps trying to manipulate Ukrainians like it manipulates its own people. I am Slavic and think Russia could be a great place, if it just stopped this stupid imperialism. Look at Gary Kasparov, this is what he is fighting for, a free Russia.
Old Russia with Kiev as political center never owned Crimea
Migrating populations moving towards western Europe where ruling there.
Mongols, Tatars and Ottomans dominated the area during early medieval times.
Russia took control of the area after Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774)
Than Russia started the politic of Russification of the area sending colonists.
Soviet Union: 1922–1991
On October 18, 1921, the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was created as part of the Russian SFSR.However, this did not protect the Crimean Tatars, who constituted about 25 percent of the Crimean population.
Ethnic groups in the area.
Groups: Russians (58%), Ukrainians (24%) and Crimean Tatars (12%).
Jake you are right, except this was Russian because Russification. Just because Quebec has French in it should Quebec be part of France. Just because New England have English people in it by decent does this mean it should got to England. This is part of Ukraine. Russia never allowed Ukraine to exist, via brutal imperial military rule. Just like they did in Poland. Areas of Poland even have Russian populations but that does not mean this should be Russia. Your logic is that of an imperialist.
Russian is a oligarchical empire ruled by a czar in 2009. Ukraine wants to be part of the EU and NATO. Russian wants to rule over other countries. They should respect the treaties they agreed to. They should focus on democracy in their own country before they preach it to other countries and regions. This is why Gary Kasparov runs the site theotherrussia.org. He is a smart guy and knows that Russia’s future is democracy not imperialism. If there is free movement of labor and capital like the EU, then what does it matter if this is Ukrainian or Russian. So Russia should honor its promises and stay out of Ukraine.
First of all, I’m Ukrainian. You guys need to realize that Ukrainian came BEFORE Russian. Also, I live in western Ukraine, and no one there considers them self to be Russian. We just think ourselves to be neighbors.
Shche ne vmerla Ukraina…!!!
Agreed Ukraine was before Russia. Ukrainians had a country of high culture long before most. However, the political map of Europe favored countries with the bigger armies. This is why Poland and Ukraine were partitioned by Imperial Russia. I hope that Ukraine joins Poland as an EU nation and Russian will become more democratic.
This artificial Crimean conflict was hand-made by idiocy of Khruchev, who gave Crimea to Ukrain as a gift, because he was a Ukranian himself. Stalin before him made several gifts to Georgia to please his Georgian inner child. What would you say if, say, a French prime minister give a part of France (e.g. Normandy) to a neighbor (e.g. England)? Or a member of Irish government gives an island to its northern neighbor? This is an obvious violation of the foreign policy. Now lets look at the USA. If a piece of California is given to Nevada by Nevada-born president? It seems OK for a time being – same country! but if USA collapses there will be inevitable and bloody territorial dispute.
Russia has more oil than Saudi Araba. Russia does not want to take over Ukraine – Russians have been living in Ukraine and doing business there for the past 1,000 years. Russia does not want foreign weapons on post-Soviet soil. This is not an unreasable request. The USA for example does not want missiles in Cuba. Its the same thing. After WWII Russia invaded Poland, Hungry, and others. The west did nothing to stop this. And the west will do nothing to stop a russian invasion today. All we are going to accomplish by democracy rattling in Ukraine is push this country to civil war. And as in the case of Poand after WWII, the west will do nothing to stop Russia sending troops to post-Soviet states. The truth is we can give Russia respect in two ways – by honoring thier rights to post-Soviet states, or by war. A war that we will not fight. Those who we inspire to deomocratic values will be gunned down once again by Russia tanks, and the west will do absolutley nothing to stop it. Ask Poland.
1000 years of Russian history tells me otherwise. The Russian government is imperialistic.
They will not go for military conquest rather, they sponsor Ukrainian puppets with big money and if they could annex parts of Ukraine though a corrupted political process, such a Crimea. A better solution is free press in Russia and Ukraine and Russia join EU with free movement of labor and capital and transparency at all levels.
I am very pro Russian. I really love Russian culture. However, the people who support Moscow’s manipulation are not in my mind Russian patriots. Too many have paid the price for Moscow’s greed.
Hi Gill,
just to let you know that Russia as a country did not exists from 1917 until the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The other point is that Soviet Army invaded Poland in 1939 which is before WWII.Soviet army occupied eastern Poland until the Summer of 1941. The western part of Poland was occupied by Germans in the same year but one month before Soviets.
In the summer of 1941 the Soviet army was expelled by invading Germans. As you know it was the official beginning of the WWII.
Poland was occupied by Germans until the Soviet Army reconquered it in the summer of 1944. An agreement at the Yalta Conference(Stalin, Roosevelt, Churchill – company of democrats) permitted the Soviet Union to annex almost all of their Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact portion of the Second Polish Republic, compensating the People’s Republic of Poland with the southern half of East Prussia and territories east of the Oder-Neisse Line.
Basically the west not even tried to stop this annexation but permitted it.
I would not dramatize the situation today. Georgia is not an indicator.(it is a big discussion by itself and we can bring it up in more appropriate topic). Ukraine is not Georgia and I am sure Russians understand it.
There are actually no one in Ukraine (at least those who are in power and in parliament) who is fighting for democratic values.
And at last. What should we ask Poland for. Soviet tanks did not do anything when communist regime collapsed in Poland. No one was gunned down.
To Benjamin.
Where Ukrainians came before Russians.
Do you mean Ukrainians as a nation or they came first to the territory named Ukraine?
I agree that in the Western Ukraine there are no Russians or any other ethnics. It is because your Nazi leader bandera and his naimiti killed most of the none Ukrainians and some Ukrainians who was opposed to the ethnic cleansing including communists and ethnic minorities in that region.
If you are Ukrainian then you can at least read Ukrainian language.
Найстарша назва українського народу й його першої держави — Русь.
In case you do no read Ukrainian it means that
the first name of the people and the territory they lived in was Rus’
Which means that the word Ukraine was known from the old times and was used by Polish people and Russian people. The meaning of the word was “border” or close to border land.
You can read this and much more in the book
ІСТОРІЯ УКРАЇНСЬКОЇ ЛІТЕРАТУРНОЇ МОВИ by
Іван ОГІЄНКО
The book name is History of Ukrainian language.
I do not know if it is available in English.
I red it in Ukrainian.
Here is more.
There are very little pure Russians or Ukrainians left. In the beginning they were all the same Slavic people and they spoke the same language. But as, I hope, you know after 200 years of Khazar ruling(at least 8th and 9th century), then rulings of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Muscovite Russia there are very little left from the early Slavic.
Mark I do not want to offend you in any way but it seems to me that most of the participants of your blog have the same knowledge of the world history or the history of their countries as you have. Which is zero.
