Radio or TV for foreign language learning
What is the better choice to support your language learning though radio or TV? I prefer, radio actually. The reason is on TV there is a lot going on to distract you. While with radio, you can turn out all other distractions and focus on the words to get a sense of what is going on. Also with radio you can have on in the background passively; while, TV has abrasively loud commercials and can be not as harmonious to do other work with. A room feels different when it has a TV compared to a radio. With a radio the dialogue is focused on the spoken work and everything is explained. There is a higher concentration of words per minute on a radio than TV as a TV a lot is conveyed visually. That is why I feel listening to the radio is more productive than watching videos or television for foreign language learning.
The more active you are in your learning. The more you have to engage your imagination, the better. You know children that just passively watch Television all day have slowed language development? This is because it is not active. Radio takes a little more imagination.

I’m torn. While I see where you’re coming from, I think television can be a good tool for language learning as well. For example, the visuals of a television program can actually help you figure out what’s going on, and perhaps make some sense of unfamiliar vocabulary. With radio, often, if you don’t know the vocabulary that’s being used, you’re lost – completely.
do you know where i can get more information about the affect of radio and TV on language learning? thanks…
