Polish hip hop bible and language learning
A while back I bought a Polish bible to help me learn Polish. It made sense as the stories I knew, the vocabulary was basic, and it was something I enjoyed and could read over and over again. But the problem was the most modern Polish translation was in my opinion a little more modern than the king James bible. And learning Polish sentence structure and vocabulary turned out to be, rather, interesting. Further I did not want to walk down the street using a Polish that would be like Shakespearean English.
Polish hip hop bible to the rescue
I found a Polish hip hop gospel of John, translated in a respectful way but using the language of today. It is amazing in the way they creatively use the language and the vocabulary is the most current there is. In my opinion it is not how a person speaks, but what he has to say that is important and communication is best when it speaks the language of the people who are listening.

Hello, I have been reading your site and it seems really interesting but how on earth can you use the Bible to help learn a language? I study French and Italian at uni and it would be great to use the word to practice as I do not have to feel guilty reading it when I’ve got loads of work to do! Are there different parts of the bible to use for different grammar tenses? Please help as I would LOVE to use this method of learning a language! God bless you xxx
Kay, I live in Poland and there was an Amish family that learned Polish with almost only the Bible. I myself use this technique and the famous Polyglot Cardinal Mezzofanti learned many if not most of his 42 languages this way. I also know a priest that learned English this way, combined with classes. So it will work.
The main thing, which ever way you try to learn a language, for example with the Bible it should be fun for you. Some people like to draw pictures or use fantasy with learning. Imagining yourself in that time talking to Jesus in the foreign language for example.
Another thing is this, you need to do is set your expectations. Most People think they can learn a language with magic. To learn a language is blog sweat and tears. If you understand that then try to take a passage out of the Bible you like and memorize it in your target language. I have mp3 of my target language. I also learn the vocabulary from the passage with homemade flashcards. If you can memorizes even a short passage of the Bible and let it sink into you and meditate on it and really know it well, were you can test yourself, then move to the next passage. Some people like to memorize a whole Gospel like Mark or passages from palms. The Book contains all the vocabulary and grammar you would ever need to learn a language. My only suggestion is get a very modern natural language translation or else you will be speaking a very old French or Italian. If you love the Bible it is a guilt free way to learn a language for a busy person.
For another cross-cultural hip hop / Amish, um, thing …
