The good news is the details of a landmark study that shows favorable impact of meditation on memory and brain impairment. Is this something that is new or you did not already know? Meditation has stood the test of time.
Even just eight minutes a day showed an improvement. This is almost common sense, that meditation or a form a deep relaxation will help memory. It will also help language learning. The paradox is that the people who need time to relax the most will be the ones who claim they have no time, not even eight minutes a day to meditate.
Why meditation helps memory
- reduces stress hormones in your body which are counter productive to your cognitive process
- increases awareness and therefore you learn to take mental snapshots of daily events subconsciously
- increases confidence – this is a bit of a placebo effect
- if combined with visualization can bring energy and healing to your brain
- increases cognitive diligence
- lowers blood pressure which is good for brain cell life
- allows you to do more during the day
- it will not take stress out of your life only change our reaction to stress
- x factor or unknown reasons
I personally had a brain lesion and know that prayer and meditation does help healing. If you can not do these because of time constraints in your life I highly recommend walking. Walking in the forest or somewhere peaceful. It is like a form of meditation. The main thing is to bring your body back into harmony.
I do not believe current medicine has the ability to repair the brain greater than something like meditation. I think in the future they will, but in this moment meditation is the best. If you have problems with your memory please write a comment and I can give you more of that helped me personally.
Meditate for your memory when you have vigor
I think meditation in the morning is great, but you need to get up early before the rest of the world or there will be too many distractions. But if you are a night person, I guess this is OK also. I am just too tired. It takes physical strength to meditate. That is why when you are healthy I recommend to use your vitality to start so if you are not, you have the habit.
Joseph Cardinal Bernardin made this same point about prayer. When you are young and healthy pray.
Is meditation esoteric?
- it does not have to be anything more than relaxation
- read Dr. Herbert Benson Relaxation Response it is a non religious treatment of meditation
- technique is not important for meditation, contrary to many people who tell you otherwise, you do not need a mantra
- the whole point of meditation is to remove you from ‘have to’ and ‘shoulds’ in your life, do not make this another of those
- meditation is pretty well backed up by medical research, hundreds if not thousands of studies
- it does not cost anything and might be better than any memory pill
There are many types of memory
There is working memory, long term and short term but all are similar in that it takes a biological process to form a link in your brain from once brain cell to another. This is what meditation encourages. So even though science says there have complex terms for the function of the Hippocampus and Limbic system, there is really only one thing at work. That is brain cells making connections.
If anyone has had any experience with meditation and memory please let me know. I know there are many studies but I am more interested in personal experiences.
