English is not spoken in Crimea. I thought the magic language of English thats works everywhere would be spoken in Crimea. Not even a little. Not even one word. Not even young Russian students. Ukrainian is the offical language but really Russian is spoken a bit more. Also Tartar is spoken by a small minority. English no. Why would English be spoken. The Russians have their world and are happy with it. Their world goes from the Pacific to the Middle East to Europe. Moscow is the most expensive city in the world and has the most billionaires. All a Russians hearts desires can be found in Russia Ukraine, White Russia etc. It is like Americans with English. I was shocked. But lucky I speak Polish and even though a Western Slavic language with Ukrainian and Russian being Eastern, The Slavic languages are the most closely related of any Euro language group, only seterated by about 1000 years. Further the cultrues are very close. So its almost like the brotherhood of the slavs. If you know the basics of one languages in the brotherhood you can get by and will be greeted with smiles by other, even if the politics of the two nationalities are not 100% in line. People are people and politics is stupid. Smiles and few words in Polish and I was in. I even got good rates on my guest house as I refrained from English. There were from White Russians Belorussians staying in the say guest house and sure enough we could speak to each other and sharing travel plans and ideas.
