English as the official language for the Untied States of America
I am American. I was born in United States. I learnt no other language than English, until I learnt French in school. My parents spoke Polish and Ukrainian, but in the 1960s when I grew up, the conventional wisdom in the United States was to be American, and speak English.
Does the United States need English as the official language? First, what is an official language? An official language s the language that is used in policy offices and for official purposes. Second, and more important it is the language that is taught in school. And third an official language could be the language that is required for citizenship admission.
As big of an American patriot that I am I do not believe the United States needs English as its official language. I think the arguments for having the United States having an official language are strong and worth consideration. And opponents could show examples of nations that have two or more official languages, such as Canada, with no catastrophic effect at this time, if anything makes the country more interesting.
I would like to consider the official language debate from ideological based reasons. The ideology of the founding fathers was freedom. I think the founding fathers of the United States did not care about such things as an official government of the United States language. They were coming from the ideals of the post enlightenment. Their intention was to establish as nation based on the ideal of freedom, with the government minimally involved the lives of people. “The government that governs least governs best”- Thomas Jefferson (natural rights). Coming from the philosophies of Rousseau (social contract) and Locke definition of property rights), to the founding fathers there was nothing ‘holy’ about English. Rather, English was simply a means to communicate. English is neither the language of God nor democracy. Rather English is simply the international language of today, because it was spread by the Imperial England. Many people at the time of the founding of the nation spoke many different languages, French, Native American, German, Swedish, Dutch, African, Swedish, Scottish, Irish, Welsh and Spanish etc.
The point of government is to represent the people, whoever the people at the time might be. So if the United States of America makes English as its official language, its just one more politics media event that stirs the blood of voters, but I do not think has the intention of democracy in mind, especially those of our founding fathers. All this being said, I might be wrong on this. I want to stay objective and open minded on this issue. Therefore, I am very open to hear comments about the United States and English as an official language.

El español es anterior al ingles en estados como California . Nuevo Mexico, Texas o Florida. Mi familia ha vivido en San francisco mucho antes de que llegaran los emigrantes anglosajones despues de la guerra con Mexico
The comment from Kan, says basically Spanish predates English in large parts of the US, from California to Florida, and many people’s families have lived in these areas since that time.
My reply is I agree. I am a native English speaker from preppy New England but I really do not think speaking English has anything to do with the ideal of the founding fathers of the USA or what democracy is about. Government should serve the people and if people speak different languages do not make an official language imposed by law. The Soviet Union (I live in Eastern Europe now and ask the people there what they think about this government official language nonsense) on the other hand try to force Russian as the official language in all their areas of control. Lets learn from that and make America a democracy not an empire and therefore, not have English as the official language of the United States of America.
I don’t care who is here. The official language in the United States of America is English. People who elect to come here should be willing to adopt our ways (When in Rome do as the Romans). If they don’t want to be Americans than they should leave. I am fed up with all of them. If you want to hold on to your culture than stay where that culture already exist and stop trying to force your culture on Americans. We didn’t invite any of you to come here and we are the offspring of the people who built this nation through their blood, sweat and tears- literally.
Immigrants and real Americans
Tired of all the immigrants? Really? Where were your grandparents from? Or your great-grandparents? Sick of all the immigrants? Try picking berries or grapes 12 hours a day, back breaking work, for little or no pay, see who is waiting in line to “take back” the job that so few people are willing or able to do? If all of the immigrants to the U.S.-illegal and legal went on “strike” for one day, the entire country would shut down. Of course, that won’t happen, can’t happen, because immigrants have little, or no, power, especially if they don’t have papers. Want the land given back to the “real” Americans? Then plan on giving it back to tne indigenous native American groups who were first here, before they were “discovered” by Columbus. Does history get to start just where you and others want it to? Semms rather random and self-serving.
“Give us your tired, you poor…” isn’t that an invitation? All white people in the United States are descended from immigrants, who certainly did not assimilate or learn Native American languages. This country was founded on ideals of individualism and individual freedom. Part of that freedom is the freedom to speak one’s native language and retain one’s native culture.
Thank you for your opinions. If the earlies people in those parts of the country wrer spanish speaking why did English become the common language? IF you think that the government spends money frivolously now, wait untill you have to have a translater for all the languages in a court room. Here is a good one with no official language go to the DMV and get your liscense re-newed!!
Life would be so much easier if everyone spoke different languages settling differentses would be a snap. Will there be time for math or science and learning all the other languages in your town,or province. Will it be the U.S. or grey area for some other country?
That’s right Octiva May we have been speaking English for over 200 years anyone that’s wants to become an American must learn to speak all of our road signs are in English and numerous other things. Why don’t they go to Germany and try to get them to change. OK what if we went to Mexico and said hey Spanish is no longer your primary language, you need to start speaking English. How would that go over? If you don’t like the fact we speak English don’t come here. One more thing to Mark Biernat. Not all of New England is Preppy buddy. Just like anyplace else there are just preppy people such as yourself that come here and then since your here you think it is all preppy but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Look here these are Mexico’s Immigration laws I say we adopt them /…tell me what you think!!
Since the President of Mexico is so upset with the state of Arizona and by extension, the rest of the United States, it is clear that he needs to be mollified–and I think I know how this can be done.
Clearly Mr. Calderon believes that Mexico’s immigration laws are far more progressive and fair than our own–so why don’t we adopt Mexico’s legislation on immigration?
This would include the following provisions per J. Michael Waller at the Center for Security Policy (Fox News link)
That immigrants are:
* in the country legally;
* have the means to sustain themselves economically;
* not destined to be burdens on society;
* of economic and social benefit to society;
* of good character and have no criminal records; and
* contributors to the general well-being of the nation
Furthermore, that:
* immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
* foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
* foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country’s internal politics;
* foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
* foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
* those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.
But wait! There’s more!
Naturally we would want to be selective as to who we allow into our nation, so the following provisions would apply (Articles are from Mexico’s Ley General de Población, or General Law on Population):
* Foreigners are admitted into Mexico the United States”according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress.” (Article 32)
* Immigration officials must “ensure” that “immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance” and for their dependents. (Article 34)
* Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets “the equilibrium of the national demographics,” when foreigners are deemed detrimental to “economic or national interests,” when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican American laws, and when “they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy.” (Article 37) * The Secretary of Governance head of DHS may “suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest.” (Article 38)
For the sake of national security, we would have the follwing provisions:
* Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request, i.e., to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants. (Article 73)
* A National Population Registry keeps track of “every single individual who comprises the population of the country,” and verifies each individual’s identity. (Articles 85 and 86)
* A national Catalog of Foreigners tracks foreign tourists and immigrants (Article 87), and assigns each individual with a unique tracking number (Article 91).
* Foreigners with fake immigration papers may be fined or imprisoned. (Article 116)
* Foreigners who sign government documents “with a signature that is false or different from that which he normally uses” are subject to fine and imprisonment. (Article 116)
Failure to obey the rules would result in the following sanctions:
* Foreigners who fail to obey a deportation order are to be punished. (Article 117)
* Foreigners who are deported from Mexico the US and attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. (Article 118)
* Foreigners who violate the terms of their visa may be sentenced to up to six years in prison (Articles 119, 120 and 121). Foreigners who misrepresent the terms of their visa while in Mexico the US — such as working with out a permit — can also be imprisoned.
For illegal immigrants:
* “A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos dollars will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally.” (Article 123)
* Foreigners with legal immigration problems may be deported from Mexico the US instead of being imprisoned. (Article 125)
* Foreigners who “attempt against national sovereignty or security” will be deported. (Article 126)
And for Americans who provide assistance to illegal immigrants:
* A Mexican US citizen who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to up to five years in prison. (Article 127)
* Shipping and airline companies that bring undocumented foreigners into Mexico the US will be fined. (Article 132)
I propose that one of our national legislators introduce a bill containing the above language, and call it the American Sovereignty and Security Act. It will probably have to be a Republican who introduces the bill, but if they can get a Dem cosponsor, then so much the better.
Sure seems to me whats good for the goose isn’t good for the gander .. Now is it folks?
English as the official language for the United States of America
I am patriot, but if language was such an important part of what it means to be an American, why did the founding fathers, from George Washington to John Adams and Thomas Jefferson decide against an official language of the USA? It was a consideration at the time.
A democracy works to represent the people, whoever the people are.
In contrast, I am living in Poland now and the Soviet government tried to enforce Russian everywhere in Eastern Europe. This is not democracy.
English as the official language of The United States
As far as I know the official language of the United States is ENGLISH. (defacto)
I am astounded at how far our government and various Utility companies and others have distorted and resorted to abolish/modify English as our language.
When I contact various companies and utilities, I am given a choice to punch a button for English or Spanish.
English should not be a choice, it should be mandatory.
In some stores you cannot even find literature in English, only in Spanish.
Any company/Organization who does not default to English automatically should be boy cut from doing business with.
Any one who wants to live in this country legally and benefit (any benefit whatsoever) from our system, must speak, read and write English or be deported.
When you travel around the world, no country has subrogated their language to any other foreign language, why should we.
We should demand from our government – Federal, State, and County and any local governments and agencies throughout the United States to implement that strategy or be thrown out of office
