Andrzej Sapkowski Polish fantasy writer
Poland has a some of the greatest fantasy and sci fi writer’s in the world. I do not know if its the dark skys and grey Polish winters are just imginative minds, but one of the most interesting is Andrzej Sapkowski a Polish fantasy writer.
Andrzej Sapkowski takes themes that are often connected to Slavic mythology and cleverly weaves them into his stories in a suble way.
Andrzej Sapkowski in English
His book the Witcher (or the Hexer) is not available in English. I am not sure if I should read it in Polish or in English. In English it would be easy and relaxing for me. In Polish it would be better but there are many special fantasy words I do not know and I might miss some things and it would be work (I am an native English speaker not Polish).
I will think about it. its 35 pln either way and maybe I will read a few easier Polish fantasy books before I tackle this one. Either way if you like fantasy I would highly recommend the Polish fastasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

I like fantasies set in worlds other than the swords and sorcery kinds of worlds. Orson Scott Card, Jane Yolen, Neil Gaiman, Charles de Lint, for example. My first fantasy, ZADAYI RED, is set among the prehistoric Cherokees, where there’s myticism and magic. (No, it’s not out until July, so don’t…) Anyone suggest others? Anyone writing fantasy that’s not horror or swords and sorcery?

Excellent recommendations! See I also think there has been a turn in fantasy towards excessive wizards and magic. Too much cream not enough milk. Hey, I am a big ‘Lord of the Ring’ fan mind you, however, fantasy does not need to be always set in this type of mind set. I mean prehistoric Cherokees can be more imaginative than another Harry Potter clone.
Stanislav Lem is another great Polish author. You probably have read Solaris but I feel obligated to mention it
.
I really like your blog. It’s very down to earth and you say a lot of smart things.

Hi Atana! Great name by the way. Lem is one of the greatest authors of all time. My only regret is I did not meet him, before he passed away, as I have lived in Krakow for many years. I am reading Narnia in Polish now, for my Polish its a good level. Maybe I will read Lem in Polish next.
Another interesting polish author – Janusz Zajdel.
Hi A, Never heard of Janusz Zajdel, another author I will have to check out. I am doing quite ok reading Narnia in Polish so after I finish all 7 books I think I will be ready for some of your recommendations and of course in Polish.

Najbardziej lubię : Paradyzja, Cała prawda o planecie Ksi, Prawo do powrotu.
